Description
Harmonix & Hasbro · 2017
A tabletop music game made of three parts: an electronic board with five card slots, a deck of NFC-chipped cards, and a free app on a phone or tablet joined to the board over Bluetooth. Each card holds one part of a licensed song — vocals, drums, bass, or a loop — and each slot is keyed to a colour. Put a card on a slot of its colour and the app folds that stem into whatever is already sounding, matched to the current tempo and key; put it somewhere else and it does nothing. Cards carry a power value from one to three. White wildcards may be played on any slot and change the speed and key of the whole loop.
The mix runs continuously, and the competitive modes are played on top of it rather than between rounds of it. In Clash, two sides alternate playing cards by colour and score by covering a slot with a card of greater power than the one already there; a side that cannot do so triggers a reset of the board. In Party, up to five players race each other to satisfy requests the app calls out, with penalties for playing the wrong card. Freestyle drops scoring entirely and leaves the board as a mixing surface.
