Description

Daily tous les jours

A series of interactive pavements made of light-sensing audio tiles. Passers-by cast shadows onto the ground and the shadows trigger music. Because the sensor reads light rather than weight, the sun is the other player: as it moves, shadows stretch, turn and soften, and what your body can do to the pavement changes with the hour.

People are free to decide how to engage — walking straight through, or dancing with their whole body, alone or together.

Mesa Musical Shadows

Mesa, Arizona, US · source

Three separate soundscapes were composed for one artwork: one for the long shadows of sunrise and sunset, one for the short shadows at midday, and a third for the shadows thrown at night by surrounding artificial light. The studio frames the piece around heat — in the warmest parts of the world the sun sets the pace of life, and shade in a public square is not decoration but a condition for the square being usable at all.

The Pearl Divers

Dubai, UAE · source

The same tile system, re-composed for a place. For centuries people in Dubai dived for pearls — “the local gold” — and here shadows trigger traditional bayati and hijaz melodies, day and night, as a tribute to that mostly forgotten trade. The tiles can be arranged in multiple configurations, so the work adapts its shape to the site.
