Description

Charlie Sdraulig · 2018–19

An intimate performance-installation for a vocalising violinist and one audience member at a time — Sdraulig calls that person the audient. Fourteen minutes. Written for Marco Fusi, who gave the first performance on 8 March 2019 in the CCRMA Listening Room at Stanford University and has since played it in Paris, Belgium, Manchester and Sweden.

It belongs to a set of three pieces, each built for one performer and one listener: one to one (2018–19) for violinist, tend (2019) for a gesturing, vocalising performer, and enfold (2019–20) for pianist on an amplified upright. Each can also be performed on its own.

Sdraulig’s stated concerns are the social dynamics of musical situations, and the quiet, small-scale behaviours — sonic and gestural — through which those dynamics show up.

⚠ What is not confirmed here. The setting, forces and duration above come from the composer’s own listing and the Australian Music Centre catalogue. What the audient is asked to do, and what in the performer’s part depends on them, is not documented in any public source — it is in the score, which is distributed through the AMC. Do not describe the interaction until the score has been read.
