Lüneburg, from Between Art and Game (GAPPP) (2018).

What it is for

A five-axis plot for describing a gameful audiovisual work: interface · determinism · agency · input-mapping · ludus–paidia. Each work becomes a shape, and shapes can be laid over each other.

Why keep it

Most methods here analyse data. This one analyses works — which is the comparison a practice-based thesis actually has to make, and there is no standard instrument for it.

It also converts an argument I keep making in prose into something visible. Claiming my work sits in a different place from GAPPP’s is assertion; plotting both on the same five axes is evidence.

How it holds up on my work

Immediately usable on Phosphor — plot it first, then plot SPLT/SCRN and one GAPPP work over it. If the shapes overlap, the distinction I have built the whole position on is weaker than I think, and better to find that out now.

The axes are Lüneburg’s, built for concert works with trained performers. Ludus–paidia and agency should transfer; interface probably needs re-cutting for a work where the interface is a mass-produced consumer object rather than an instrument.

Not yet plotted. This is a one-afternoon job and it is overdue.
