Lüneburg, from Between Art and Game — GAPPP (2018). Developed further in Ciciliani, Ludified (The Green Box, 2022), which is the fuller version and not yet read.
What it is for
A five-axis plot describing a gameful audiovisual work: interface · determinism · agency · input-mapping · ludus–paidia. Each work becomes a shape, and shapes can be laid over one another.
Why keep it
Every other method here analyses data. This one analyses works — which is the comparison a practice-based thesis actually has to make, and for which there is no standard instrument.
It also converts an argument I keep making in prose into something visible. Claiming my work sits somewhere different from GAPPP’s is an assertion. Plotting both on the same five axes is evidence, and it can come out against me.
How it should hold up on my work
Immediately usable on Phosphor: plot it first, then plot SPLT/SCRN and one GAPPP work over the top. If the shapes overlap, the distinction the whole position rests on is weaker than I think — and it is better to discover that now than in a viva.
The axes are Lüneburg’s, built for concert works with trained performers. Ludus–paidia and agency should transfer without modification. Interface probably needs re-cutting, because in her case it is a purpose-built instrument and in mine it is a mass-produced consumer object that the audience already knows how to hold.
Status
Not yet plotted. A one-afternoon job, and overdue.
